Accommodation

We have block-booked the entire reserve’s accommodation for delegates. Accommodation is as follows :  basic camping with power points and hot &cold showers  empty rooms in the research houses with communal kitchen and bathrooms  basic rooms with beds and mattresses but no bedding in the same research houses.  tourist standard houses with luxury rooms equipped with duvets etc with communal kitchen, bathrooms and lounge.

Houses each have a kitchen equipped with electric stove with oven, a small domestic fridge and kettle, but no utensils, cutlery crockery or pots and pans. All registrants are urged to make provision where possible for their own refrigeration needs as fridge space is limited and the days can get hot. Ringers should please bring tables and chairs as is wont, as only tables and not chairs will be provided at the conference venue. Firewood is available at no extra cost.

All accommodation is within walking distance of the conference venue.

Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis, and so we encourage delegates not to delay but to register as soon as possible. Due to the limited number of beds, all houses will be shared. Registrants are requested to share rooms, and preference will be given to people who are prepared to share. A limited number of the basic rooms have a single bed only, and are thus suitable for singletons. Only registered delegates will be eligible to book accommodation. Conference attendees are welcome to book additional days before and after the Conference should they so desire.

Meals

Breakfasts will be the conference delegate's own responsibility, as will be all lunches. The only meal included in the registration will be dinner on Saturday evening. All registrants must supply their own cutlery and crockery for this meal which will be a communal braai. Please ensure that any special dietary requirements are specified on the registration form. It is essential that final numbers of persons attending be confirmed and paid for by February 28th at the latest to facilitate catering. All meals must be pre-booked as none will be available on site during the conference. Please bring ample liquid refreshments as the nearest shops are 30km away. Tap water at Barberspan is potable: it is safe to drink although it is a little saline and contains high mineral levels (iron). Fussy drinkers should bring bottled water. Admission fees Admission fees are covered by registration fees. It is not envisaged that there will be any day visitors due to the remoteness of the locality, but requests in this regard can be directed to the organizers.

Climate

Barberspan is an inland saline waterbody in the summer rainfall area of South Africa. During March daytime temperatures will still be high (above 25º C) with some thunderstorm activity expected in the afternoons. Nights can be chilly. Due to the exposed topography of the land, wind is often a problem. This is not a malarial area.

Footnote

The conference organizers look forward to welcoming you to this once proud ringing station situated on an inland saline waterbody. They will do their best to ensure your visit and experiences will be ones to remember.
